چکیده

Vibration free cooling of detectors to cryogenic temperatures is critical for many terrestrial, airborne, and space based instruments. Cooling of solids by anti Stokes fluorescence is an emerging refrigeration technology that is inherently vibration free and compact, and enables cooling of small loads to cryogenic temperatures. In this Highlight, advances in laser cooling of solids are discussed with a particular focus on the recent breakthrough laser cooling of Yb doped YLiF4 crystals to 114 K. The importance of the material structure, composition, and purity of laser cooling materials and their influence on the optical refrigerator device performance is emphasized.

Cryocoolers for Microsatellite Military Applications

Space qualified cryocoolers have been extensively developed for large military and commercial satellite electro-optical (EO) infrared (IR) missions, but not so for microsatellites due to the complexity of the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of the mechanical refrigeration system. The trend in military responsive space programs is leaning towards microsatellites that are cheaper and faster to...

Identification of parasitic losses in Yb:YLF and prospects for optical refrigeration down to 80K.

Systematic study of Yb doping concentration in the Yb:YLF cryocoolers by means of optical and mass spectroscopies has identified iron ions as the main source of the background absorption. Parasitic absorption was observed to decrease with Yb doping, resulting in optical cooling of a 10% Yb:YLF sample to 114K ± 1K, with room temperature cooling power of 750 mW and calculated minimum achievable t...

AIRS Cryocooler System Design and Development

JPL’s Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument is based on a cryogenically cooled infrared spectrometer that uses a pair of pulse tube cryocoolers operating at 55 K to cool the HgCdTe focal plane to 58 K; the instrument also includes cryoradiators at 150 K and 190 K to cool the overall optical bench to 150 K. The cryocooler system design is a key part of the instrument development and foc...

The Los Alamos Solid-State Optical Refrigerator

Optical refrigeration may provide the physical basis for solid-state cryocooling. Devices based on this physics would be vibrationless, compact, and free of electromagnetic interference. Having no moving parts and being pumped by a diode lasers, optical refrigerators would be rugged with operating lifetimes of years. Experiments at Los Alamos National Laboratory have demonstrated the basic phys...

Cryocoolers: the state of the art and recent developments.

Cryocooler performance and reliability are continually improving. Consequently, they are more and more frequently implemented by physicists in their laboratory experiments or for commercial and space applications. The five kinds of cryocoolers most commonly used to provide cryogenic temperatures for various applications are the Joule-Thomson, Brayton, Stirling, Gifford-McMahon, and pulse tube c...
